Personal Statement: I
started reading very early in my life, and soon I developed a passion for
science fiction, adventure, thriller, and suspense books. My favorite book
is The Thief o f Always by Clive Barker. I try to encourage
reading in young children whenever I can, and someday I hope to go to college
and major in writing (I am currently taking journalism as an elective at my
junior high school). So far, reading has gotten me farther in my grades, helping me to be a straight "A"
student and qualifying me for GATE reading and English classes.

The Best and Hardest Thing by Pat Brisson
The Best and Hardest Thing is without a doubt one of the most moving books I have ever read. The story is based on fifteen-year-old Molly Biden, a strong, studious girl who wants nothing more than to leave her saintly past behind her and become an entirely new person.
Told in poetry form, Molly's life goes from that of dependable girl to wild woman. However, an unexpected surprise makes Molly realize she may have moved too fast to get a prize that wasn't worth the fight.
Reading it, it made me realize that I should always stay true to myself and not let my values be swayed by anything. I found this book to me inspirational, and I reccomend it to anyone who loves a great read.

The Help was a ground-breaking novel, touching on the vital issue of racism and prejudice in the 1960's. Skeeter Phelan, a small-town writer from Jackson, Mississippi, has big dreams of moving to New York and becoming a writer for a large newspaper such as the New York Times, instead of writing the household hints column for the Jackson Journal. Skeeter strongly disproves of the way her friends treat their "help", especially with the start of the "Home Help Sanitation Initiative".
She decides to write a book based on the viewpoints of black domestic maids in her hometown, and publish it under anonymous to show the world how bad the racism has gotten.
As the novel progresses, we see the antagonist of our story, Hilly Holbrook, become suspicious of Skeeter and the whole town eventually turn against her under Hilly's command. we see the pasts of Milly and Aibileen unfold as they share their story's with Skeeter and convince other maids to tell Skeeter their story's as well.
This book is a wonderful read for young and old alike.

The Child Thief by: Brom
Of all of the books I have read, The Child Thief is definitely the most descriptive and imaginative. In a modern, twisted version of Peter Pan, Brom tells the tale of Avalon, a magical land ruled by the Goddess Modron, the Great Horned One, and the Witch, Ginny Greentooth.
Peter, a half-boy, half magical being, harbors a hatred over men, the men that spat him from society when he was a child in medieval Ireland. He is lured to Avalon by the daughters of Ginny Greentooth as a child, and has lived in Avalon ever since being bewitched by the Lady Modron. Throughout the centuries he has collected lost children, children who have turned against society or are unhappy with their lives. These lost children are named Devils, and sent to Avalon to protect the lady against the evil flesh-eaters, the few human adults that were captured there as pilgrims. They are killing the magic within Avalon, turning to gray where there was once life. Countless die to protect the lady, and Peter continues to bring in more to be slaughtered.
He himself has a desire to be a child forever, although his "games" usually end in death. Nick, a boy brought to Avalon by Peter, sees the sick, twisted side of him that others seem to be blind to. How many devils, how many children, must die for his precious lady?
This book was so powerful, I felt myself at a loss for words.
While reading, I saw the two sides of Peter, one a fun-loving boy trying to protect what he loves, and a dark, murderous creature who will do anything to get what he wants, with a desensitization to death. The use of imagery and creativeness lure you into the story, and I could not put it down until it was finished. This is a great novel, full of adventure, suspense, redemption, revenge, and love. Overall, an amazing story for teens and adults alike.
Warning: This book contains material that may not be suitable for younger children. (Strong Language, Violence, and some sexual content.)

The House of the Scorpion is
a brave, outrageous, and disturbing book. It tells the tale of Matteo
Alacran, a young boy living in the poppy fields ruled by Lord El
Patron. Matteo lives a simple life as a child, until he learns the
secret that would change his life forever. He is not considered human,
but alien, an animal. Surrounded by lies and empty promises, Matteo's
only hope is to escape into a world where freedom is not always
guaranteed. I loved this book, and I would recommend it to anyone and
everyone who loves a great adventure, with a little mystery entwined
along the way.

I found the Summer of Fear to be a very bone-chilling novel. But I think the way the story unraveled was what shocked me the most. Staying away from all the regular Halloween junk (Don't go in the closet!!!), Summer of Fear takes a psychological approach, and makes you think about the events the book describes. In the end, all the pieces are put together, and the conclusion is something you'll never expect.
I absolutely loved this book, it was fast, intense, addictive, and I loved the fact that I could never guess what was going to happen next. Summer of Fear is a great book for everyone who loves a good thrill.

Charles Benoit is the nominated author of three adult mystery novels, this being his first book for teens. In this story, YOU, Kyle Chase, are told how the small choices in your life eventually and inevitably lead to your destruction. Going through some rather unique aspects of teen life, Charles Benoit describes how you befriend Zack McDade. Zack believes that life is a game, where everyone wins if you play by the basic rules of life. In his world, it's much more interesting if you play by HIS rules. In his game of last man standing, Zack finds the weak spot in your life, pushing and pushing until you eventually crack. In the end, he is the only one standing. Unfortunately for YOU, your weak spot has more power over you than Zack expects, and YOU are out of the game. Forever.
I found this book to be very powerful, alternating between the current story and flashbacks in your life. At first, it seems to be moving slowly, picking up pace as your life races to its end. YOU is gut-wrenching, shattering, and I recommend this book to any who enjoy a devastating and unforgettable story.
Due to content, I recommend only ages 13 and over read this book. (under aged drinking, smoking, and sexual content)

I (and millions of other screaming fans), were very excited in the arrival of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner , an Eclipse novella. Bree Tanner (first introduced in the ending chapters of Eclipse), is just one of the newborns in the army created by Victoria, whom they only know as "She." She finds comfort in Diego, an older vampire who shares the same curiosity as she does. However, when they discover everything that has ever been told to them is a lie, Bree and Diego must either trust the enemy, or die fighting. Bree Tanner is a great story, and anyone who has read the Twilight series must read this book.

The Harry Potter series is probably one of the best fantasy novels of our time. Full of mystery, adventure, and with a touch of romance, J.K. Rowling has caught the attention of millions with her star character, Harry Potter, and his struggles to survive in a world where he is loved by long-time friends Ron and Hermione, hated by death-eaters Bellatrix Lestrange and Lucius Malfoy, and hunted by Lord Voldemort, the most powerful dark wizard of all time. Being haunted for 17 years by the brutal murder of his parents, constant visions of Voldemort inhabiting his mind, and a horrible prophecy that would change his life forever, Harry must destroy Voldemort to save the only family he has left, or die trying.
I loved the Harry Potter series because it made me not want to read the story, but to live it. It was suspenseful, entertaining, devastating, and all together a great book series for anyone who loves a gut-wrenching, stunning, and unforgettable adventure.

Twilight box set
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
I started off reading the Twilight saga in rushed eagerness due to all the good buzz I'd heard about it. Starting at a slow pace, Twilight picks up speed when small-town girl Bella Swan's life meets with that of Edward Cullen, a drop-dead gorgeous vampire (emphasis on "dead"). Bella's life rapidly changes from a dreary, rain-filled existance in Forks, Washington, to a life of surrounded by very dangerous company. This book is overall very romantic (yet not at all mushy), and I really enjoyed reading it. This would be a great book for any first-time romance readers (it's not just for girls!).
New Moon-Stephenie Meyer
The second book of the Twilight saga starts off just as exciting as the last. Bella Swan has just gone through one of the most crushing time of her life, when the love of her life, Edward Cullen, abruptly vanishes, with barely a whisper of goodbye. After months of complete emptiness, Bella befriends Jacob Black, a burly teen-ager with a dark secret of his own that will tie their lives together forever, and leave Bella to the hardest decision she will ever face. I loved reading New Moon because it was very dramatic, with the return of Victoria, a hard-edged redhead with the intent to kill. Very fast paced, it certainly lived up to Twilight's reputation. This book is great for anyone looking for a gut-wrenching adventure.
Eclipse- Stephenie Meyer
The third book of the Twilight saga is slightly more slow paced than the others, not as much action throughout the book, as it deals with the daily aspects of a teenage life (minus the gorgeous vampire boyfriend and werewolf BFF). However, applying for college and graduating from high school suddenly become meager issues when Victoria returns to Forks, after recruiting an army blood-thirsty newborns to stalk and eliminate Bella. Though slow at first, Eclipse blossoms with the most viscous battles yet, where (im)mortal enemies fight as allies to save the girl they both love. I found it to be very gripping and intense, and I know Eclipse will leave you breathless until the very end.
Breaking Dawn- Stephenie Meyer
In the final chapters of the Twilight saga, I was left in awe as I watched Bella's life change forever. In transactions between Bella and Jacob's point of view, I saw how Jacob became a much bigger of Bella's life and Bella's love with Edward grew stronger, her life passed from one to the next, and a new Cullen came into the picture. However, I saw that through the happy moments, danger was still on the horizon, and in a battle that marks the most epic battle of the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn ends in a way you would never guessed. I was sad, when I finished the series, because I felt that now the adventure was over. But the adventure will never end. The Twilight saga is in my opinion one of the best teen romance series of our generation. Stephenie Meyer is a wonderful writer, and I eagerly await her next novel.

I started reading the Percy Jackson series after hearing all my friends rave about how incredible it was. But in the end, I was slightly disappointed. The books were good, they were adventurous and daring, but the books seemed to be repeating the same things over and over, and I could always tell what was going to happen next because it was so heavily hinted. However, it was unique, and I would give it three and one-half out of five stars. I believe that these books are meant for those just starting to branch out in their reading, between the fourth to sixth grades.

Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata (NEWBERRY AWARD WINNER)
In Lynn and Katie's world, anything can be Kira-Kira (Japenese word for sparkling, glittering), you just have to see it in a certain light. When this Japenese family moves to an nearly all-white community in the deep south of Georgia in the 1950's, it is up to Lynn to explain to Katie how the world operates, and how to find Kira-Kira in the most common of days. However, when Lynn suddenly falls ill, it is up to Katie to find something shining in the future for her whole family.
I enjoyed this book because it tells the heart-warming tale of two sisters who always look at the glass half-full. This would be a great read for those who enjoy emotional and tear-jerking stories.

With more attacks on the horizon, is it right to suspect Jenna? or is something

Jumpstart The World brings a whole new meaning to the word, "friendship." After being dumped off at only sixteen years old to live by herself in downtown New York, hard-headed Eliie struggles to adjust to her new home and life. She finds companionship in her next door neighboors, Frank and Molly, who seem to understand her in a different light. I received a big a shock when reading this to discover that Frank was not exactly what he seemed. Then, Ellie had to look within her heart to find the true meaning of friendship, no matter what the circumstances.
I enjoyed reading this book because it was very emotional and compassionate, catching the essence of what it means to be a true friend. However, due to content, I would recommend this book to thirteen years and over only (this book describes same-sex relationship s,underage drinking and
underage smoking).

I
first started reading The Thief Of Always after watching the movie Coraline,
realizing the two had similar plots. After the first page, I couldn't set it
down until I had finished it. Clive Barker (usually an adult novelist, the New
York Times bestselling author of Imajica and The Great & Secret Show)
outdoes himself in this suspenseful adventure.
Harvey Swick runs away from his
life with the Great Gray Beast February, right into The Hood House, where
everyday is a entire parade of seasons, with Spring in the mornings and Winter
in the evenings. But lurking in the shadows of this so-called paradise hides an
evil theif, shrouded by dark magic and illusions. Only a true thief, a Thief of
Always, could steal back what rightfully belongs to him.
This book
is daring, adventurous, suspenseful, and it will leave you on pins and needles
until the very end. This is my favorite
book, and the best I have read so far. I'd recommend this book to anyone who
enjoys action, adventure, suspense, and thriller novels.

Alice in Wonderland gift edition
Here we have one of the best fantasy novels of all time, written by (who would have guessed it) a math teacher! Lewis Carrol spun the tale of Alice, a bold, outgoing little girl who finds herself down a rabbit hole! There, she discovers a strange new world she dubs "Wonderland", a place where things get "curiouser and curiouser" by the second. I enjoyed this book because it is very descriptive and imaginative, such that it will make you understand the world in entirely new ways. Those who enjoy fantasy should definetly read this novel.
