The Last Song

I had always been opposed to reading Nicholas Sparks’ books, but after I saw this book’s movie starring Miley Cyrus and Liam Hensworth, I knew that this would be a good read.

This is a heartwarming story about a girl’s first encounter with heartbreak and love. Ronnie was a stubborn teenage girl. Ever since her father had isolated the family, she had become a rebellious and short-tempered teenager. However, now, Ronnie’s mother has decided to have Ronnie and her younger brother, Jonah, live with their estranged father in a small town near the beach.

Resentful and angry, Ronnie avoids talking with her dad at all costs, coming home late and hanging out by herself at the beach. Soon, though, she finds herself falling deeply in love with Will, one of last people that she would have ever fallen in love with as he was the town’s “perfect boy.” Letting down her guard as she becomes friends with Will, Ronnie begins to improve her relationship with her father.

The Last Song demonstrates the power of love. Ronnie discovers the power of love as she experiences the magical moments of first love and the importance of the love between parents and children. This is an unforgettable book and will keep you turning the page until the very end.

This special edition in the Warriors series is definitely worth reading. Learning about Bluestar’s childhood and the cats she grew up with in the old forest was very interesting. I loved this book because it tells the whole life of a wise and intelligent cat.

This book explained how many hardships Bluestar went through to become leader and the many sacrifices she made in her life to become leader of Thunder Clan.

I love the Warriors series and I am looking forward to reading the latest book.

11 Birthdays is a hilarious read in which two ten year olds can’t get past the day of their eleventh birthday. Ever since they were born, Amanda and Leo have always had their birthday together since they were born on the same day.

Then, on their tenth birthday, they had a big fight in which they learned that there are words that you can’t take back. That made them decide to have to have separate birthday parties.

On their 11th birthday, Amanda had a Hollywood-themed party in which she would have to dress up in an itchy costume as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. Meanwhile, Leo was celebrating with a huge birthday bash including a hypnotist, rock band, and a football player. Amanda is jealous, but she has bigger things to worry about when she starts realizing that her birthday keeps repeating itself. Then, she learns that Leo is experiencing that same thing! What follows is a series of adventures as Amanda and Leo try to resolve their never-ending conflict.

I would rate this book four stars out of five, as it keeps you on the edge of your seat until you finish the book.

I love the title of this book because “tail” is the correct word in this story. This book is about a girl named Emily who finds out that she is a mermaid during her first swim lesson in seventh grade.

An interesting series of events follow this that is full of adventure, mystery, and friendship. I recommend this book for girls ages eight through twelve and say that this book has about 200 pages. I can’t wait to read the other two fantastic books in this mermaid trilogy.

The Daughters Break the Rules By Joanna Philbin

“They didn’t ask for fame, they were born with it.” Lizzie, the famous daughter of a model, Carina, the well-known daughter of a billionaire, and Hudson, the beautiful daughter of a pop star singer, are best friends. They all share something in common- fame.

After Carina leaked private information about her billionaire father, she is forced to suffer with an ancient cell phone (When she had an iPhone), $20 allowance (When she had a credit card), and a Metro card (When she had a private driver and car). With these things, she must also deal with her love life and live with arguments rising above with her friends. Carina began to host a private party, so she could gain more money. As she starts to grow helpless, she meets Alex.

I would rate this book five stars out of five. I loved the storyline because the novel is written in a totally different perspective. It gave an insider’s glimpse into the gilded world of those born to the famous. It was a thoroughly enjoyable book filled with excitement. The Daughters Take the Stage coming in May 2011 will be the third book of this bestselling series. The Daughters Break the Rules is a must-read as it talks about friendship, life, family, and love. I would recommend this book for children ages 9-14 because they would enjoy this amazing novel the best.

The Fabled Fifth Graders of Aesop Elementary By Candace Fleming

In this book, there are seventeen hilarious fables, but my favorite story was called “Another History Lesson”. The moral was "little by little does the trick." The fable was about a boy named Lenny teaching history in class. The class teacher, Mr. Jupiter had given them a history assignment, but no one had done it except for Lenny. This did not happen usually, so everyone was surprised. Lenny was a boy who loved to make people laugh so he taught the class about the Revolutionary War in a very funny but descriptive way. So laugh along with these amusing fabled as you learn important morals and life lessons.

I would rate this book four and half stars out of five and would suggest this book would be more enjoyable to kids older than seven years old.

The Battle of the Labyrinth By Rick Riordan

I couldn’t wait to read the fourth book in the Percy Jackson series, and when I did start reading it, I couldn’t stop reading the book until I finished it.

The third book in this series takes danger to a whole different level as the fear of Kronos becoming powerful rises. Percy, Annabeth, Tyson, and Grover decide to take a quest to the Labyrinth to prevent Kronos’s army from invading Camp Half-Blood. Soon, Percy and Annabeth learn that more and more followers are joining Kronos’s army, including demigods. Meanwhile, Grover learns some shocking news about the god of the wild, Pan, while wandering the Labyrinth. Tyson frees his hero from prison, and gives him hope to fight Kronos’s army.

The fourth book in the Percy Jackson series is a nail-biter at every page as this book is full of heart-pounding action in every turn of the Labyrinth.

Lena, the 15 year old beauty, went to Greece with her little sister Effie to meet her grandparents. In Greece, she is introduced to a guy named Kostos, who is around her age. Bridget, the athlete, went to Mexico for a rigorous soccer camp. There she gets a crush on one of the teenage coaches, Eric. Soon, she learns that her father is going to get remarried, and he is currently staying with his wife-to-be. Tibby, the rebel, doesn’t go anywhere and gets a job that she hates at a local store, Wallmans. She soon meets a girl named Bailey and they become good friends.

So, throughout the summer, the four girls pass around the pants, and send letters to keep in touch with each other. This funny, perspective, and moving book is a must-read for the summer.

The second book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, Rodrick Rules, is a hilarious book. I love the part when Greg, the main character, or should I say the “wimpy kid”, goes to the bathroom during swimming. He gets in a stall and wraps himself like a mummy in toilet paper. He does this to avoid catching hypothermia.

I love the silly cartoons that are drawn in the book because they are very amusing. I would recommend this book to any reluctant reader who would like to get a good laugh. [Book #2 is due in the movie theaters in March 2011].  I can’t wait to read the third book in this series, The Last Straw.

Peter and the Secret to Rundoon By Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson

This book, the conclusion of the Starcatchers trilogy, is an amazing book. It is filled with adventure, as characters fly large flying ships, fight violent warriors, and rescue people from closely guarded stinky prisons. My favorite character is Tinker Bell. She was always there for Peter, saving his life from brutal enemies. Tinker Bell also helped Peter’s friends by spying on the ‘Others‘ and during small fights, she would distract the enemy.

I loved the action packed storyline and enjoyed every page of the book. I would say that the conclusion of this series is great, and I am looking forward to reading more about Peter Pan’s exciting adventures.

Magic Tree House #44 Ghost Tale for Christmas Time By Mary Pope Osborne

In Osborne's latest Magic Tree House book, Jack and Annie take a trip to London during the Victorian times in the 1800’s.  The kids are given a violin to assist them in their task to bring happiness to Charles Dickens.  They try to help inspire the author to write his well known book, A Christmas Carol. Mary Pope Osborne really outdoes herself in this fantasy and magical chapter book. I would recommend this book for any person, young or old, who is ready to leap into an exciting story filled with adventure, patience, destiny, and hope.

Annabelle, a teenager living in Normal, Maine, was having trouble with her love life. On one side was her boyfriend, Matt and on the other side was Jonah. Matt just didn’t want to move on and was always clinging to the past. Jonah, Matt’s best friend, just liked Annabelle because she was really nice and innocent. My favorite character was Mary-Tyler. She was a teenager who wanted people to look past her weight and get to know her inside feelings. She met Annabelle at the beach and helped her solve her love - life related problems.

This novel talks about friendship, love, and family. I would rate this book three and a half stars out of five.

Twilight By Stephanie Meyer

The beginning of the supernatural creature generation. A phenomenal book. Stephanie Meyers brings her characters, Bella (an average high school girl) and Edward (a stunning magnificent vampire) to life in her young adult debut novel, Twilight. As Bella gradually learns more about Edward’s complicated vampire life, they start to develop a very close relationship.

I would recommend this book for any preteen or teenager who is interested in genres like romance, mystery, or fantasy. Twilight has thrilled many people across the world and it will get you excited about this fantastic series as well.
