Tish Bonner resents having to keep a journal for her English class, even though her teacher, Mrs. Dunphrey, has told the class she will not read any entry marked "Do not read this". But as Tish's life at home unravels, especially after her mother abandons the family leaving Tish to struggle with taking care of herself and her eight-year-old brother, Matt, the journal becomes a much needed confidant. And when Tish finally breaks down and shares the journal with Mrs. Dunphrey, she finds the help she desperately needs.
