California Writer Series reading scheduled at CSUB Born in Tijuana, Mexico, Espinoza is the youngest of 11 children. At the age of two, he migrated to southern California with his family and grew up in suburban Los Angeles. He earned his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Riverside, and a master's in creative writing from University of California, Irvine, where he was the editor of the university's literary magazine. He now teaches fiction at CSU Fresno. Espinoza published his first novel, "Still Water Saints," in 2007. The book was named a "Discover Great New Writers" selection at Barnes and Noble Booksellers. Sandra Cisneros, author of "The House on Mango Street," praised his book, saying it was "as perfect as the beads of a rosary." Author Lisa See hailed the novel as "fresh, magical, beautiful, evocative." The event is free and open to the public. Russo's Books will sponsor a discussion with the author, book sale and signing. The California Writers Series is sponsored by the Walter Stiern Library, Associated Students, Inc., CSUB departments of modern languages and English, and Sigma Tau Delta, the English honors society. She is strong in heart and determination. She raises her children and endures hardships and struggles—such is an epitome of a black woman in America. Emotionally driven, author Fred Luther Haynes celebrates the lives of African American Women Trailblazers to provide inspirational knowledge about African American women of Kern County and to pinpoint some of their struggles and successes. Drawing inspiration from his very own mother, Haynes gives recognition and honor to the black American women’s tribulations and victories—beginning from forced voyages on slave ships in the African Continent across the vast Atlantic, to the Civil War and Great Depression. This book admires their efforts as well as their contributions towards the positive change in the community. In the first section of this stunning tribute, Kern County African American women are given prominence by putting into account their exceptional life stories along with their portraits. The second section includes a chronological reference and abridged stories of more key women. "It is my wish that the legacy of these remarkable women to include their personal struggles and accomplishments, their life work, family heritage, and hope for the future will impart motivation and inspiration for young people of all ethnic groups. It is a mirror of strength, dedication, courage, aspiration, and love." - Fred Haynes Bakersfield Hometown Heroes WeekendTry as they might, there are some things our big box and online competitors will NEVER be able to do...
