Carol Cole O'Dell signs "Mountain Game"

Meet Carol Cole O'Dell when he signs his sci fi novels (set in 1800's Indian Country) at Russo's Books on Saturday, September 4.

Carol grew up in South Dakota, learning the joys of camping and the study of tracking and woodcraft. He spent his teenage years trapping and hunting in the Missouri backwoods. He now lives in the California Sierras.

An outdoor enthusiast, he still enjoys riding horses, hunting, fishing, and black powder. As an avid reader of both history, science fiction, and fantasy, he longs for the days of yore when hunter-gatherers ruled and life was simpler.

Every Saturday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. we hold a Yu-Gi-Oh trading card game tournament at our Marketplace store. Sign-ups begin at 2:45. $5 entry fee includes a pack of cards and prizes for the top 8 finishers.

If you are new to the game, we recommend our Friday afternoon sessions, but if you are ready to battle, be sure to join our official Saturday Tournament.

Kenny Elmore signs "One Second"

1975 Kenny fell in love with motorcycles; it was his gateway to freedom.
Motorcycles were a big part of his life, and in 2008 a near fatal motorcycle vs
car accident changed his life forever. This book details the events of his life
and struggles with rehabilitation.

Kenny has been married to Wendy for over 20 years and they have a son and
daughter. Kenny wrote his memoir during his rehabilitation. This process proved
to be cathartic physically and mentally.

Dust Bowl Days. Two free presentations are
offered at Russo's in the Marketplace, Sundays, September 12 and 19, 2
to 3 p.m. Teachers, students, and history buffs are invited to attend.
For more information and a wonderful historical experience, come to the
October 16th annual Dust Bowl Days Festival. This free event will be
held, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sunset School in Lamont, California. See a

Presenter: Dr. Zelma Frankhouser completed her bachelor of vocational degree from CSU Long Beach. This
degree focuses on teaching and working with re-entry adults and special
populations (prison education). She completed her master of arts degree
from CSU Long Beach in human services with a focus on working with adult
populations who are struggling to change their lives. Dr. Frankhouser then completed her
Doctor of Theology through Summit Bible College, Bakersfield campus with
a focus on Christian counseling.

PAM MUNOZ RYAN DAY will include the College Heights Elementary School Mariachi Players at 1:30 p.m.

Our program kicks off at 2 p.m. with Mayor Hall proclaming it Pam Munoz Ryan Day in Bakersfield. After a few guest speakers who will talk about Pam's Bakersfield roots and her nationwide literary contribution, Pam will say a few works. Throw in a short play based on one of Pam's Books courtsey of The Empty Space Theater, a small reception, and a book signing, and you've got a memorable day for all.

We are pleased to announce that author/illustrator Joe Cepeda, former news anchor Lisa Kimble Edmonston, and a representative from Assemblywoman Jean Fuller's office will also be on our stage.

ABOUT PAM:

Pam Muñoz Ryan (a.k.a.: Pam Bell) is a member of Bakersfield City School District’s Hall of Fame. After graduating from
BHS, she received her B.A. and masters at San Dieg State University. She resides in the San Diego area.

Her 30+ books for young people range from picture books for the very young to middle and young adult novels. A two-time winner of the Willa Cather Award for writing, her novels have garnered some of the nation’s most prestigious accolades for children’s writing.

Pam Muñoz Ryan has been invited to the White House on three occasions for the National Book Festival and other literary events. She is the National Education Association Author recipient of the Civil and Human Rights Award.

In October of 2010, she will travel as the American author representative to South Korea where she and authors from twenty-six countries will collaborate on an international book on peace for the International Board on Books for Young People.

Top four in each age category win prizes!!!

Tournament format, should you wonder, is modified/constructed (4 K value). TOp 2-4 single elimination finals.

This will replace our normal 2 p.m. tournament today.

We will return to our regular 2 p. m. slot next week, and then the week after (October 3 at 10 a.m.) we will be hosting our Battle Road Tournament.

Deacon Scotty Bourne signs "The King of Nothing"

Ronald "Scotty" Bourne is many things: A Scot, born and bred; a devoted husband; a wild animal trainer; a movie production manager and producer; and, most notably to his friends in Bakersfield, a loving and compassionate deacon at St. Francis Church.

Deacon Scotty is also an accomplished writer, and it is in this role that he will be visiting Russo's Books on September 25 at 1 p.m.
