Mike Russo (updated 1/12)

Mike and his family have owned Russo's Books since 1989. Mike has his BS & MBA from CSUB and he and his wife Nancy have three children. They attend St. Francis Catholic Church in Bakersfield.

An active member of the community, Mike has served on numerous boards and committees.

Having worked in retail since 1981, Mike currently teaches Retail Sales for KHSD ROC and from 2001-2005 (and again in 2011) taught Business & Retail Marketing at Bakersfield College. He also has 7 years of vocational education experience with Bakersfield Adult School.

Mike spends his spare time enjoying baseball, UCLA extension classes, and his kids.

Keep in mind that he is NOT a workaholic, as he is having much too much fun to call any of this "work".

Empires of the Sea by Roger Crowley

As much as I enjoy history, I just don't get around to reading very much of it. I'm pleased at this exception. Suggested by a customer, it is amazing to see how warfare and attitudes have changed, and not changed, in 500 years.

Convict Lake by Richard Mallard is my new favorite by a local author. Indeed, the local angle left me dumbfounded.

Beyond the tragic and heroic rescue on President's Day 1990, Mallard spins an amazing story of the "troubled youth" industry. For one who believes that the private-sector knows best, this story shows that left unchecked bad people can do bad things ... with our money.

I'm more into rock and blues than heavy metal, so other than their top 40 hits, I never followed the Scorpions much. Still, with their former drummer & lyricists signing at our store (11/6/11) I thought I'd give the book a shot. Wow! This guy is a riot (errr...not Quiet Riot). He realizes he has lived a dream and that he is playing with house money. He has a great sense of humor, and if you can handle his straying from topic to topic and then back again, you're in for a treat. A rock 'n roll memoir made fun ... just like its suppose to be.

"Powerful, disturbing, moving, chilling."  I'm not sure what words describe this, the most amazing book I've read in quite some time.

Although I was born 22 months after the JFK assassination, this book still resonates.  The first half is a fascinating look behind the scenes on how the Secret Service operated in the late 50s / early 60s.

The emotional roller coaster then takes off as the agents assigned to protect JFK on November 22, 1963 break their 48 year silence.

When the authors visited Russo's, the large Bakersfield crowd, including myself, gave Mr. Hill a standing ovation.

Having now finished the book, I have but one bone to pick ... the chapter entitled "Don't Call Me Hero."  Sorry, Mr. Hill you are the embodiment of the American Hero.  God bless you.

This is an amazing concept for a biography. The author, who is 2 years younger than me, tells his life story of growing up in the 1970s in terms of various baseball cards. Having grown up in this era and with these very cards, I was mesmerized by this book.

Our lives have many parallels while young, although his bizarre family life and eventual drugs, unemployment, and drifting soon have us parting ways. Still, I related to this book on many levels. Highly recommended, especially if you love baseball, 1970s culture, and/or coming of age tales.

California, we hardly knew ye!

This book gives an interesting and very readable historical perspective (starting in 1848) on how we into this mess, and then gives some proactive, "out of the box" ideas on moving forward.

As I did with Reagan and GHWBush's biographies, I purchased this one on audio.  There is just something special and historically significant hearing the former president tell his story in his own voice.

Okay, I agree that GWBush is not the ideal narrator, but I still highly recommend "Decision Points."  From his early bout with alcohol to 9-11, Iraq, Katrina and so much more -- this book is living history.

The Russo Boys One of the disturbing trends of the internet is the concept of "overshare."  Here, for example, we learn of a multi-generational love for baseball and bad haircuts (despite the best efforts of the hats).  Either way, I am very much enjoying this book.

In Volume Two (1982 - 1984), Breathed is in top form.  A fantastic collection of every Bloom County ever published, made even more entertaining via publisher sidebars and author recollections of various strips.

People often stop to ask me where I got my amazing sense of humor (it's a fantasyland I live in, just go with it).

Much of it lies at the door step of Hank Ketcham and the only mother I ever had, as he wrote this amazing strip and she introduced me to the strip while I was still very young.

I am up to six volumes in this series and loving every minute of it.  Of course, now as a father myself, the humor is made all the more special as Dennis proves that "boys will be boys."

Speaking of humor, few authors can top Lane Smith.  This children's picture book is a hilarious look at the eBook craze.  Traditionalist rejoice ... if you can't (or won't) join them, laugh at them.

That said, the very next book I review is an eBook.  So the joker laughs at me, I guess.

I'm officially a 21st Century book reader (albeit screaming and kicking along the way).  This is the first Google eBook I purchased from www.russosbooks.com .  The nice part is that I can read it from any computer that I happen to be sitting at (and if I had a smart phone or eReader I could also access it from those).

A good primer on the beginning or casual fan.  I've enjoyed it, but I imagine the hardcore fan won't gain much insight from this title.

For those new to "the Bakersfield experience", let us initiate you by stating that reading Haslam is a must. An Oildale native, his writings always hearken back to his local roots. Armed with a Ph.D. in English, he has been called "the quintessential California writer" and "the most important writer to emerge from California's Central Valley since Steinbeck". This 30-year retrospective of his work includes both fiction and non-fiction and is a great jumping off point to become initiated in "the Other California."
