Lost Hotels on California's Historic Ridge Route by Harrison Scott
Harrison Scott discovered the Old Ridge Route when he was a teenager, dismissing it until years later when he and his son were hiking the area. His son Jimmy observed that the steep grade must have been challenging for the old cars. Scott told his son that the five-mile grade, now the north-bound I-5 was originally the 1933 Ridge Alternate (US Highway 99) and the original 1915 route was somewhere east of the interstate. Scott recalled the road from his youth and noted that it had not been altered and it indeed demonstrated early highway engineering concepts. This book is a photographic journey through the various hotels and inns the popped up along the historic routes. Southern California history buffs will treasure these vintage photos and recollections.
Harrison's first book, Ridge Route, has been one of our all-time bestselling local history books. Written about the original 1915 road which connected Bakersfield and Los Angeles (pre-dating old 99 and the current I-5), this is a great book with amazing research and vintage photos. One of our bestselling local books ever!!!!!
